Everyone's freaking about Ed Sheeran's cameo in Game Of Thrones
Very mild spoiler alert - no actual plot points inside!
The seventh and final season of Game Of Thrones just premiered - and among the expected hysteria and fanfare is a very pointed question... WTF was that Ed Sheeran cameo?
He sang... around a campfire. Describing the song as a 'new one', it wasn't actually a sneaky plug for his new record - rather, the song 'Hands Of Gold' from the Song of Ice and Fire books.
The long-anticipated appearance from everyone's favourite ginge singer sounded like a funny concept to begin with. And while he looked super cute in his Lannister soldier gear, the whole bit felt… random.
The Twitterverse agreed:
It’s not the first time a musician has scored a spot on the show - members of Coldplay, Sigur Ros and Snow Patrol have appeared on the show already. But GOT creators David Benioff and DB Weiss had been after Ed for a while.
The explained during an appearance at this year’s South By Southwest festival in Texas that the casting was meant as a suprise for #1 Ed Sheeran fan Maisie Williams - who plays Arya Stark on the show:
“We tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it.”
