Karl Stefanovic Is Officially Returning To The Today Show

It's official: Karl Stefanovic will make his big return to Today program in 2020 after he was unceremoniously axed last year.

The 45-year-old will co-host with Weekend Today's Alli Langdon while Georgie Gardner will leave the show, News Corp reports.

Karl confirmed the news in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald published today, saying: “I am as shocked about this as everyone else.”

The current team including Georgie Gardner, Deb Knight and Tom Steinfort will be replaced, with Georgie reportedly returning to Nine News and Tom to 60 Minutes.

In a seperate statement to the Sydney Morning Herald, Georgie said:

“I was consulted two weeks ago about the future direction of the Today Show, and naturally I’m disappointed with the outcome.”

“However I’m very proud to have been part of an innovative and progressive programming decision – the first female hosting duo in Australian breakfast television.”

“It was a privilege to work on the Today Show for nine years, I learned a lot. I have no regrets, even though the scrutiny and public discourse has been daunting and disproportionate. It’s also at times been cruel,” said Gardner.

“My plan now is to return to my first love, news, and to catch up on some sleep! I am grateful for the support and friendship offered by my Today Showcolleagues on-air and behind the scenes and I am humbled by the unwavering loyalty and kindness of viewers.

“They have made my job more rewarding than they will ever know."

The Nine Network's flagship morning program has hit record low ratings since Stefanovic was dumped in 2018 after 15 years.

His sacking followed a difficult year in which the show's ratings were already falling amid unrelenting coverage of his personal life.

Stefanovic left his wife of more than 20 years, Cassandra Thorburn, in 2016 and began dating designer Jasmine Yarbrough.

He and Yarbrough, 35, wed in a lavish four-day celebration in Mexico last December.
