The new Doctor Who is a woman and the Internet has so many feelings

There are a lot of angry dudes...

Today the BBC announced that the 13th Doctor Who would be played by Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to have the part in the show's 54-year history – in which only white males have played the title character.

But it seems that while much of the show's fandom is excited for a woman to take on the role, a lot of people – mostly men – seem to be pretty cut up about it. Sadly, this isn't much of a surprise.

Chris Chibnall, the show's new head writer and executive producer, said:

"I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice."

In a statement the actress said:

"it's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait."

It didn't take too long for the Internet to react, and sadly, many people were pretty angry about the fact the show had hired a woman for the role:

Thankfully, there were many more people who were there to roast the sexist trolls:

Jodie Whittaker will begin her time as the new Doctor next year.
