"I’m sorry but Sarah Hyland only donating 1k and asking everyone else to donate the rest of the 10k is messed up since she’s a millionaire."

Tragedy struck Modern Family star Sarah Hyland and her family last weekend when her 14-year-old cousin, Trevor Canaday, was killed in a car accident.

According to KETV, Trevor was driving with his father Clifford when their car was struck by 36-year-old Jeffrey Eggeling, who ran a red light. Eggeling was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Clifford reportedly remains in critical condition following the accident.

Following the incident, Hyland took to Instagram and Twitter to direct her followers to a GoFundMe page set up by Trevor's family to pay for his funeral and Clifford's medical expenses.

The actress's Modern Family co-stars Ariel Winter and Nolan Gould also shared the GoFundMe link on their social media accounts and donated to the campaign ($2,500 from Winter and $1,000 from Gould).

It appears that Hyland's social media message worked as the campaign's initial goal of AUD$34,000 was quickly met and exceeded in just a day.

Shortly after asking fans to donate to the GoFundMe campaign, some users started criticising Hyland and questioned why the wealthy actress is asking for donations from people.

It is reported (via Deadline) that Hyland receives a salary of over AUD$136,000 per episode of Modern Family, which is currently in its 10th season with over 200 episodes broadcast.

Following the wave of backlash from people, Hyland hit back with a new tweet:
