The body of a woman has been found inside an apartment in Sydney's CBD with detectives working to establish if her death is linked to a nearby stabbing rampage.

Police say the woman was found in the Clarence Street unit about 3.15pm on Tuesday.

"Officers ... are on the scene and will be conducting inquiries as to whether this incident is linked to an earlier stabbing at a hotel," a police spokeswoman told AAP.

A woman was led out of the building by police after 4pm and put into the back of an unmarked police car and driven away.

She was dressed in black, and had long dyed-blonde hair.

Police tape has been strung up outside the building with officers standing guard at the door.

Detectives are going in and out of the building wearing blue plastic gloves. They’ve also spoken with people working in nearby stores.

A man who's lived in the building for five years said he'd been told he wouldn't be allowed back inside for a number of hours.

He was shocked to hear a body had been found reportedly on the fourth floor.

Another resident said police only told her that a body had been found and she'd have to return later.

“I don’t want to feel unsafe if I’m still living in this building, because we don’t know what’s happening,” she told AAP.

A man working in a nearby coffee shop hadn’t known anything was wrong until he saw the police tape outside his window.

He told AAP the area was usually “nice and quiet” and he was saddened to about the woman’s death.

A young man was arrested on Tuesday afternoon after he allegedly stabbed a woman at the nearby Hotel CBD and attempted to stab a number of other people on neighbouring streets.

He was detained by "brave" bystanders before police arrived on the scene.

The stabbing victim was taken to hospital in a stable condition with a stab wound to her back.
