9 of the best Super Bowl ads from the past 20 years

One word: iconic

The Super Bowl has something for everyone. Even if you hate the football, you can rock out to the extravagant half-time show (this year’s was not as well-received…), or enjoy the large variety of ads.

There are many factors that make a great Super Bowl commercial, including humour, cute animals, empowering messages, emotional storylines or just a simple celebrity cameo.

We’ve listed nine of our favourite Super Bowl ads from the past 20 years below, so please, enjoy these memorable moments in pop culture history!

Pepsi - ‘Pepsi Generation’ (2001)

Wanna know how to make an ad go viral? Get Britney Spears involved. She starred in the Pepsi commercial early in her career, and plays a number of characters across different eras. Anyone who says she can’t act has obviously never seen this ad (or her 2002 film ‘Crossroads’)!

Google - ‘Parisian Love’ (2009)

We LOVE a wholesome storyline in under a minute. Told through Google searches, this ad undoubtedly had the best love story of the year (sorry ‘Twilight: New Moon’).

Old Spice - ‘The Man Your Man Could Smell Like’ (2010)

Made with the intention of becoming a meme, this Old Spice commercial has the perfect combination of humour, randomness and product placement. Oh, and he’s on a horse.

Snickers - ‘You’re Not You When You’re Hungry’ (2010)

It was the start of the company’s now-famous ‘you’re not you when you’re hungry’ campaign, and also helped bring Betty White back into the spotlight. The ad was a viral hit and other versions soon followed.

Volkswagen - ‘The Force’ (2011)

This commercial is both funny and heartwarming, making it both the most shared Super Bowl ad of all time and the second most-shared TV commercial ever. Try not to smile!

Budweiser - ‘Puppy Love’ (2014)

Puppies AND horses?! This ad might seem like a weird way to promote a beer company, but set to the tune of Passenger’s ‘Let Her Go’, the two animals proved that they’re best buds forever.

Always - ‘Like A Girl’ (2015)

While most ads are dominated by hyper-masculinity and over-sexualised women, Always encouraged girls to empower themselves and be confident. The ad was so well-received for turning the phrase ‘like a girl’ into a positive message, and many companies have since tried to replicate its success (Gillette being the most recent example)

KIA - ‘Hero’s Journey’ (2017)

Kia cleverly advertised its eco-friendly car in this hilarious ad with Melissa McCarthy where she undertakes a number of environmental tasks. Whales, trees, rhinos and ice caps, she tries to save them all.

Amazon - ‘Alexa Loses Her Voice’ (2018)

Last year’s Amazon commercial was an instant success, starring a number of celebrities like Cardi B, Rebel Wilson and Gordon Ramsay. It was such a hit that it was named the year’s most-viewed ad on YouTube with 50 million views!
